Think Egypt is only good for diving in the blazing summer heat? Think again.
Many experienced divers actually prefer Marsa Alam in winter. The air is fresh, the crowds are gone, and the underwater action is incredible.
If you are planning a trip to diveinmarsa.com between December and February, you are in for a treat. You just need to pack the right gear.
Here is why you should book a winter dive trip, and how to stay warm while doing it.
3 Big Reasons to Dive in Winter
Why leave home when it’s cold? Because the Red Sea offers something special right now.
1. The Big Shark Season This is the main event. Cooler water attracts big pelagic fish. Winter is absolutely the best time to see the famous Oceanic Whitetip Shark (Longimanus) patrolling offshore reefs like Elphinstone.
2. Incredible Visibility The water is usually clearer in winter than in spring. Visibility often goes beyond 30 meters (100 feet). It’s like diving in high-definition.
3. No Crowds Winter is quieter. You will have fewer boats at the dive sites, making your experience with turtles and dugongs much more peaceful.
The Reality Check: Winter Weather Conditions
It’s not freezing, but it is not hot. It’s pleasantly cool.
- Water Temp: Expect around 22°C – 24°C (71°F – 75°F). It feels fresh, but not painfully cold.
- Air Temp: Sunny days are lovely (around 24°C/75°F), but evenings get chilly (down to 15°C/59°F).
- The Wind Factor: This is key. The winter wind can make getting out of the water feel very cold, especially on a boat.
The Winter Packing List: Don’t Get Cold!
Being cold ruins a dive. Since you will be doing multiple dives a day with us, you need thermal protection. Leave your “shorty” wetsuit at home.
Must-Haves for Underwater:
- A Full Wetsuit: A 5mm full suit is the standard minimum. If you get cold easily, bring a 7mm.
- A Hood: Essential. You lose a lot of heat from your head. A neoprene hood makes a huge difference to your comfort.
Must-Haves for Topside:
- Windproof Jacket: Crucial for the boat ride back after a dive.
- A Warm Beanie/Hat: Put this on as soon as your head is dry.
- Extra Swimwear: Change out of your wet gear immediately after your last dive.
Where to Dive in Winter?
Some sites are better than others when the wind picks up.
- For Big Sharks: Elphinstone Reef. If conditions allow the boat crossing, this is where the winter action is.
- For Shelter & Turtles: Marsa Mubarak. This large bay is protected from most wind. It’s shallow, usually calmer, and home to giant green turtles and the famous Dugong.
Summary
Diving Marsa Alam in winter is fantastic if you are prepared.
You get better visibility and a huge chance to see big sharks without the summer crowds. Just pack a thicker wetsuit and a warm jacket, and you will have an unforgettable trip.
